— Making its North American debut at AHR Expo 2010 this week, Thinking Buildings Universe is a new web site from Grundfos Building Services, offering contractors and engineers a complete range of information and tools on commercial pumps to help make their building projects come together more smoothly. From quick-reference terminology, theories and e-learning, to sizing tools and sustainable pumping solutions, www.thinkingbuildings.com delivers everything specifiers and installers need to identify and size the correct technologies for their applications.

"Thinking Buildings Universe will ultimately offer not only in-depth information on our product portfolio, but also all of our pump systems knowledge and experience worldwide, including white papers and case studies on projects in North America, Europe and around the globe," says Terry Teach, Vice-President, Business Unit Director—Buildings for Grundfos Pumps. "The site will serve as an efficient and effective single point of quick-reference on buildings and their pump systems for anyone in the buildings industry."

Among the key features of the new Thinking Buildings Universe:

  • Case study library: This in-depth resource offers profiles of commercial and industrial projects from around the world. With easy-to-use pull-down menus, a site visitor sets his parameters, including project location, Grundfos pump family, application (heating, air conditioning, pressure boosting, groundwater, domestic water supply, etc.); and business area (commercial, industrial, waste water, chemical dosing, etc.). The system will then search the site for case studies that most closely match the user’s specifications.

  • Quick Pump Selection: Again, using pull-down menus, the site visitor finds the pump he needs by clicking the preferred option under application, pump design, product, flow rate and head.

  • E-Learning: Thinking Buildings Universe offers online tutorials on such topics as heating systems, air conditioning applications, how to make life cycle cost calculations.

  • Search Encyclopedia provides definitions to technical terms and concepts: just type in the chosen word or phrase and click for its definition.

  • Show Me: This section of the site provides ready access to a wide array of literature and tools, including product brochures, data booklets, application materials, operational software, and installation and operation guides.

  • Did You Know? With these quick links, a visitor can access graphic animation, videos, PDF files and other documents dealing with pump products and their applications. Topics include backwater protection with Grundfos lifting station technology and an innovative drinking water disinfection system.

Visitors to Thinking Buildings Universe are invited to register to gain a more extensive access to the web site’s wide range of information resources. Registrants will also receive Grundfos eNews, a digital newsletter providing the latest information new systems and products.

"Our goal in creating the new site was to provide an information tool that is universal in its access and unrivaled in its efficiency and effectiveness," says Teach. "Thinking Buildings Universe is a 24/7 resource that stands ready to fulfill your information needs in depth and according to your timetable."

The MAGNA saves energy through its exclusive AUTOADAPT™ control mode feature that automatically adjusts pump performance in response to changing demand in a heating application. MAGNA pumps also assist with the facility’s snowmelt system, ensuring safe handling and transport of custom bikes that can sell for over a half million dollars.

On display in the OCC retail store is a permanent kiosk that contains a set of OCC custom-designed motorcycle handlebars connected to a Grundfos MAGNA. Visitors can “rev” the throttle on the handlebars, as they would on a motorcycle, to simulate the variable-speed pumping of the MAGNA in the display in comparison with another set of handlebars that simulate less efficient conventional pumping that requires more “throttle” or energy to control the pump. The kiosk was originally created as part of the educational efforts required by the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED status.
